What Are the Real Benefits of a Youth Program? After 50 Years, Here's What I've Seen.

People ask me about the benefits of youth programs all the time. Parents. Donors. Community members. Grant reviewers. And every time, I resist the urge to give them a bulleted list.

Because the real benefits of a youth program aren't a list. They're a story. And after more than 50 years running Champ's Gym at Melrose Athletic Club in Roanoke, I have more stories than I can count.

I'm Victor Banks, Executive Director of Melrose Athletic Club. If you want to understand what a youth program actually does for a young person - not in theory, but in practice - here's what I've watched happen with my own eyes.

The First Thing That Changes Is How They Carry Themselves

When a young person starts at Champ's Gym, one of the first things I notice — usually within the first few months - is a shift in how they carry themselves. They stand differently. They make eye contact. They shake a hand and mean it.

That's not something I teach in a class. It's something that happens when a young person starts believing they're capable of something hard. Boxing is a learned sport, and the process of learning it - the footwork, the technique, the conditioning - builds something inside a person that goes well beyond the physical. It builds the belief that they can figure things out. That they can get better at something through effort. That belief changes everything.

Some kids come in uncertain. Some come in angry. Some come in so far inside themselves that it takes months before they open up. But the gym is patient. The coaches show up every day. And eventually, something shifts. I've seen it happen more times than I can count, and it never gets old.

Confidence That Holds Up Outside the Gym

One of the most powerful benefits of a structured youth program, and something I've seen play out specifically at Champ's Gym, is the way confidence developed inside the gym transfers to every other area of a young person's life.

We've had kids come to us because they were being bullied at school. They weren't looking for a fight. They were looking for something to stand on. After training with us, those same kids started walking differently. Not with aggression - with composure. They knew they could handle themselves if they had to, and that knowledge changed the way they moved through the world. The bullying stopped. In more than a few cases, the young person who was bullied ended up becoming friends with the one who bullied them.

That's not a boxing outcome. That's a confidence outcome. And confidence is one of the most durable things a good youth program can give a young person.

The Social Development Nobody Puts on a Flyer

Here's something that doesn't make it onto most program brochures: what a youth program does for a young person socially is just as important as what it does for them physically.

At Champ's Gym, every person who walks through the door is greeted with a fist bump. Every person, every time. Coaches, veterans, first-timers — everyone gets the same greeting. It's a tradition that started organically and has become part of the culture of this gym. And what it communicates is simple: you belong here.

That sense of belonging shapes how young people relate to adults, to peers, to authority. It teaches them what mutual respect looks like when it's practiced, not just talked about. Kids who train here show up differently in school, in their neighborhoods, in their homes. The social environment of the gym becomes a model for how they engage with the world.

We also take our athletes on trips to tournaments. And on those trips, we teach them how to conduct themselves - how to sit at a restaurant, how to tip a server, how to be a guest somewhere and represent something bigger than themselves. These are not boxing lessons. These are life lessons. And they are woven into everything we do.

What Good Youth Development Actually Looks Like

Since the founding of Melrose Athletic Club, our mission has been to address every young person as a whole. Not just as an athlete. As a person.

That means we pay attention to academics. I personally ask the young people in this gym how they're doing in school. Every time I see them. Not as a formality, as a genuine conversation. I tell them not to be ashamed of being the best student they can be. Not to hide their talents. I encourage them to be leaders, not followers. Excellence in the classroom and excellence in the gym come from the same place - discipline, effort, and the refusal to settle.

That holistic approach - addressing the whole child, not just the athlete - is what separates a youth development program from a recreational activity. And it's what the young people who stay with this gym for years are actually receiving. Not just boxing training. A complete environment designed to help them become capable, confident, productive adults.

The Benefit That Shows Up Decades Later

The truest measure of what a youth program does isn't visible in the first year. It's visible decades later.

Monte and Donte Dunnaville walked into Champ's Gym around age 10. They're now in their 30s and still here every week, coaching the next generation of athletes. That's not a program outcome. That's a life outcome. The program gave them something worth giving back, and they've been giving it back ever since.

That's what the best youth programs do. They don't just fill time. They build people who go on to build other people. The benefit compounds across generations in ways that no grant report can fully capture.
